Malcolm DeLuca is a native New Yorker and a rising junior at Benjamin Cardozo HS in Bayside, NY. As the maternal grandson of Brazilian soccer legend Pele and Italian immigrants to NYC on his father’s side, he has grown up with home cooked Brazilian and Italian food. He is also something of a “chicken farmer” as his family keeps a dozen chickens in their Queens backyard, generating lots of eggs for his family and friends. Malcolm knows first-hand the joy and benefits of raising his own food. As Ambassador, he believes that “One of the best things about living in Queens is that it is impossible to shield yourself from different human experiences.” Read Malcolm’s Feeding Resilience Blog here.

Akai Ralph is an 18 year-old graduate of Holy Cross High School in Queens and incoming freshman at SUNY Albany. “I’ve lived in Queens, New York my whole life. Queens is one of the most diverse cities in the world and home to some of the best food. The food that I love is Jamaican food. Being a Jamaican living in Queens is great because I can get authentic Jamaican food without having to go to the actual island. My family and I always go back to Jamaica to enjoy the food and scenery. My favorite Jamaican dish is oxtails with rice and peas. Everytime my mom makes it, I feel as if I’m in Jamaica on the beach. I’m very happy that I am a Jamaican and living in Queens makes me feel closer to my roots.
